There are three English songs from the 1700s referenced in the play, with short excerpts sung by the characters. To facilitate historically accurate renderings of these songs, I have collected the sheet music of the actual songs and provided them here for your convenience. If you use these materials in preparation for your production, I ask that you please inform me of when and where your production will take place
by e-mailing me at samuelstokes@yahoo.com and including my name in the program as the Music Researcher. I also ask that you include one of these ads for my website in your program.
"Go Gentle Gales" is song #5 from 12 Songs, Op. 4, by William Jackson (1730-1803). Tempo marking: Affetuoso (performed passionately, expressively. Not actually a tempo indication, but would likely be performed at a slower tempo).
"My Heart's My Own" is a song from Love in a Village, a 1763 comic opera by Thomas Augustine Arne (1710-1778). Tempo marking: Andante Allegro (fast walking tempo).
"When Absent from My Soul's Delight" is song #6 from 12 Songs, Op. 4, by William Jackson (1730-1803). Tempo marking: Andante (walking tempo).
